Theremin Stand

ONE YEAR our son Thomas gave me a theremin for Christmas. Theremins are difficult to play if you’re trying to reproduce actual melodies. I can’t do that. But I can make whale noises!

This theremin is housed in a metal case about the dimensions of a VHS cassette. On the bottom are little rubber feet, and the case also has a tapped hole for mounting it on a microphone stand. Theremin virtuosos (all three of them) will often play while standing so their arms can move as freely as possible. I’m the furthest thing possible from a virtuoso, but it did feel like it might be a little easier to use if it had a stand to lift it off the desk a bit.

The stand’s parts were laser-cut ¼ inch birch plywood. Theremins were often used to create eerie sounds for 50s sci-fi movies, so I shaped the stand’s legs to have a 50s sci-fi spaceship vibe. They also look a bit octopian, which I suppose is not surprising.
