Tablet Stand
Occasionally, when I’m feeling recklessly indulgent, I’ll buy a tablet. I resisted springing for an iPad for a long time, but we have owned a few Samsung Galaxy tablets over the years. There was a time when we used one of those tablets to control our network music collection, and I thought it would be nice to make a stand for the tablet so that it could be positioned semi-vertically for ease of display.
Maybe I should, but generally with my projects, I don’t approach the design process very formally. Usually, I’m kind of “flying by the seat of my pants” and making design adjustments all through the build process. The downside of this technique is that sometimes you head down a path that doesn’t work out. But in the case of this tablet stand, I designed it up-front using SketchUp. So, no surprises during the build process. Even so, I was not entirely thrilled with the results.
When we replaced the tablet a few years later, the new tablet was thinner and no longer fit the stand snuggly. I took that opportunity to rebuild the stand. I kept the basic design but angled some edges. I think this might have been my first project with angled lines, a characteristic that now shows up in nearly everything I build.
